Diptych: one scene in two panels
Inspired by a summer sailing camp for youth ages 8-13 learning to sail Optimist, Pico and JY15 sailboats on a northern lake in late summer while counselors observe and prepare to head out for a rescue. Featured in illustrations for The Day We Went to the Park picture book, winner of 2021 Nebraska Book Award for illustration.
This is made entirely from paper (and PVA bookbinding glue). The colors of the sky and the water are hand-dyed Japanese washi papers or layers of papers. To create the waves lapping on the sand, I use layers of tengujo washi papers, the thinnest papers in the world, which have been made in Japan for more than 1,000 years.
Summer sailing lessons for youth.
I put on workshops across the country for all ages. I specialize in designing artworks and workshops that involve all ages in creating art that celebrates a vision or a place.
