Inspired by a warm, sunny late afternoon in October at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch in Gretna, Neb. and the scents and sounds of dry rustling leaves in the fall.
Everything is made from paper. The corn plants are folded from hand-dyed Japanese washi chigiri-e papers. The barn and children's clothes use Japanese yuzen silkscreened fabric papers. The dirt path is folded from Thai Lotka papers.
The 3D origami elements include hundreds of intricately folded corn plants, about nine layers (planes) deep. The smallest corn plants in the background are about 1" high and are not visible to the eye in the final artwork, but help to create the feeling of depth and distance.
The three children are walking quickly to the next intersection in the corn maze. Which way will they turn?
This artwork has been exhibited in solo exhibits across the country including the Nebraska Arts Council Fred Simon Gallery, the Jasper Arts Center (Indiana), and the Norfolk Arts Center. When the piece was presented to the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners before an exhibit at the City-County Building, the commission chair and lifetime farmer said, "I can almost hear the rustle of the corn leaves."
