Origami and the Art of Paper Folding

Let’s explore the possibilities of paper! Join paper artist, author, illustrator and teacher Linda Stephen to learn step by step how to fold papers to make origami flowers, animals, baskets, and balloons. We will focus on easy (and some medium-level) origami patterns.

All are welcome. This class is designed for beginners. If you can fold a piece of paper in quarters to stuff into an envelope, you have the basic paper folding skills needed. Children should be accompanied by an adult. All materials are provided.

Bonus: See Linda’s award-winning origami art, touch Japanese handmade papers (including the thinnest paper in the world!), learn about Japanese paper arts, and practice a few words of Japanese.

Culture and history: Origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, is more than 1,000 years old.

About the artist: Linda Stephen has taught origami to thousands of people ages 3 to 97. Her art is part of public and private collections around the world. She works with cities, schools and nonprofits to create collaborative community artworks involving hundreds of people. See her recent community art at the Corning Opera House in Corning, Iowa. Linda lived in Japan for six years and is fluent in Japanese. See her art in the award-winning picture book The Day We Went to the Park, available at local libraries, TheDayWeWenttothePark.com or wherever books are sold.
