Spring Morning in Corning

18" x 21" x 2"
Grant

This community collaborative artwork was funded by an Iowa art grant. The Corning Opera House in Corning, Iowa asked artist and author Linda Stephen to work with children and others in Corning to create an original artwork.

The artwork for the Corning Opera House incorporated both the artist’s paper sculptures and hundreds of small origami models made by children and adults in Corning, Iowa. The artist cut the hundreds of 1/2" and 1'" squares of handmade papers and in a day-long workshop taught members of the community how to make small origami pieces that would become the trees, blossom petals and bushes of the park.

Medium

Japanese papers: folded (origami) and layered papers

Inspiration

The scene is inspired by Central Park, just across the street from the Corning Opera House in downtown Corning, Iowa. This park is located in the central square of downtown and includes a beautiful fountain, a picnic pavillion, benches for resting and a variety of trees and flowers. The park is host to farmers markets, community dinners, chalk drawing contest and more.

This collaborative artwork is created from hundreds of squares of paper that community members ages 7 to 85 helped fold in October 2022. The pieces of paper - leaves, blossoms, pine boughs, and branches - represent the many talents and gifts of people who come together to create a thriving community.
